The
Superconductive
Team
How increasing “team flow” improves performance
Overview
The highest-performing teams don’t excel just because they are great at what they do.
They excel because they are great at how they do it — with empathy, shared accountability, and trust.
This creates a feeling of safety and “flow” that bonds people together.
The team becomes SUPERCONDUCTIVE — moving fast with no internal friction, even in the face of disruption.
”But,” you might ask, “Doesn’t my team just need to work harder, with everyone bringing their A-game? Isn’t that the real key to improved performance?”
In a word, no. Keep reading to understand why.
Sports coaches have tested what leads to better performance — a team of all-star talent (prioritizing WHO is on the team), or one of high interpersonal flow (prioritizing HOW they work together).
One of the best examples of WHO vs HOW comes from rowing. At the 1936 Olympics, the Germans canvassed the entire country to find the eight strongest individual rowers (WHO). The US team came from the University of Washington, and were picked because they had great chemistry (HOW).
On his death bed, when US rower Joe Rantz reflected on winning the gold medal, it wasn’t the victory that made him tear up in joy, or beating the German team in front of Adolf Hitler, or representing America on the world stage.
It was the feeling of being on that team. (Read The Boys in the Boat for more on the “sheer beauty” of real team work.)
When people are part of superconductive teams, they put the team ahead of themselves. The effect this has on performance is greater than just the sum of individual efforts. Team culture matters.
This is true not just in sports. Consider the following example from Google.
